Our Treatment Approach

“…people will never forget how you made them feel”

~Dr. Maya Angelou

At NCS, we use a client centered approach to therapy. Confidentiality is key and each client is met exactly where they are on their wellness journey with empathy, respect and without judgement. Our goal at NCS is NOT to tell you what you should do but, through the use of a variety of treatment modalities, we intend to help you uncover the answers within that will lead you to a path of healing.

Clients of NCS can expect gentle, but direct and honest guidance as we explore their subconscious and unconscious life experiences to reveal the core stressors that are interfering with the growth, progress, peace, and happiness they are capable of and deserve.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a short-term, problem-focused form of behavioral treatment that helps people see the difference between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and free them from unhelpful patterns of behavior.

CBT is grounded in the belief that it is a person’s perception of events – rather than the events themselves – that determines how he or she will feel and act in response.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Many of us live our daily lives with a constant stream of uncontrollable negative emotions right under our awareness. These emotions affect how we feel about ourselves and how we interact with other people, including friends, romantic partners and family members. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) offers individuals comprehensive skills to manage painful memories and emotions and decrease conflicts in their relationships. DBT is rooted in mindfulness, acceptance and change which can help individuals find ways to manage their negative emotions so they can feel balanced, in control and able to interact respectfully and successfully.

Play Therapy

Many think play is exclusively for children, but we’re never to old to let go and release our inner child through play. American Psychologist Charles Schaefer ( Father of Play Therapy), suggests that Play Therapy can be utilized with adults as well.

The art of play fosters numerous adaptive behaviors such as creativity, role rehearsal, and mind/body integration. Play has been shown to increase self-esteem and decrease stress levels.

Through creative play, individuals (children and/or adults) are able to use the whole personality, and discover the self.

Play Therapy is defined by the Association of Play Therapy as “the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained Play Therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.”

Parenting Coaching

“If only my child had come with an instruction manual!” Most parents have had this thought at some point or another in their lives.

Nothing really prepares us for the experience of parenting and we know that even the best parents don’t always get it right. Some of us were brought up in loving, nurturing home environments and others faced more challenging circumstances (abuse, neglect, poverty, etc.)

Despite the circumstances, positive parenting skills and strategies can be taught to improve relationships, increase communication, set boundaries, and reinforce positive behavior.

Trauma-Focused Therapy

Most people will experience trauma within their lifetime and not everyone experiences trauma the same. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder – also known as PTSD –may occur in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a terrorist act, an act of war, a serious accident, rape, or any other violent personal assault.

While many people can recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends, others may discover effects of lasting trauma, which can cause a person to live with deep emotional pain, stress, fear and confusion, long after the traumatic event has passed.

Trauma-Focused Therapy is rooted in understanding the connection between the trauma experience and an individual’s emotional and behavioral responses. Skills and strategies are offered to assist the client with understanding, coping with and processing emotions and memories tied to traumatic life events.
